Methods For Choosing A Great Tutor

Most parents want their children to do well in their academic studies, which can help them succeed now and later in life by helping them get into college, and get into a promising career. However, some students find it difficult to keep up in school and begin falling behind. When this happens, many parents want to find their child a tutor but may not know how to go about finding the right one.

Deciding When to Hire

One of the most difficult parts of hiring a tutor is determining when it's the right time to do so. Some of the most common reasons parents choose to hire a tutor include:

- A child that is unable to master basic skills in a subject and needs to be re-taught in a more personalized setting

-A child who has learning disabilities that make it difficult to keep up with the pace of teaching in the classroom

-A child with difficulty organizing and managing their time, and is having trouble keeping up with the class schedule and handing in assignments on time

-A child with medical, social, emotional, or behavioral problems who is unable to effectively learn in the traditional classroom setting

-A desire to help their child get ahead

Making the Right Choice

No matter what the reason, parents who are choosing a tutor should consider several things before hiring one.

Talk to your child about the decision. Involving your child at the earliest possible point in the decision-making process, and explaining the need for the tutor, can help the child be more accepting when it comes time to work with the tutor. It's also a good idea to involve your child in the interview process, if possible.

Ask for recommendations. Your child's teacher, school, or even other parents may be able to provide you with information about the best tutors in the area.

Check credentials, experience, and training. While this may seem obvious, it's important to ask about what kinds of training, certifications, and credentials the tutors have. You may want to consider working with a professional tutoring company to ensure that the tutors you are working with have been properly certified and trained to work with your child. In addition, ask about the past experience each tutor has in working with children. Be sure they have relevant experience tutoring children who are similar to yours in age and ability level.

Develop a Tutoring Plan. In order to be sure you're getting what you paid for, and your child is making progress in the tutoring program, you should sit down and develop a tutoring plan in advance with the individual you choose. You may even want to have the tutor work directly with the child's teacher so the tutoring can reinforce the learning that happens in school.

Find a tutor that is convenient for your schedule. In addition to finding one that can work around the other things in your schedule, be sure the tutor is available during the peak learning times when your child can be most engaged. This may not be immediately after school, when the child is tired and easily distracted.

Ultimately you want to choose a tutor that works well with your child, is knowledgeable and capable of teaching the material in a way that engages the child in learning, and is affordable and available when you need them.
