A Brief History Of Aprons
To fully appreciate the usefulness of aprons, you first need to know a bit of its history. Originally, these clothing items were worn during a time when people had very few clothes to spare. Oh! And the aprons had quite some lovely prints with all sorts of vibrant flowers. Well, until they got covered up in grit and slime in the multitude of uses they went through. Before, you start becoming nostalgic about those good old days, just remember that there's a purpose why modern aprons have plain uninspiring colors. Apart from the fact that "flower-hating" boys also have to wear them, you don't want to conceal any stains on your apron.
What's The Use Of Aprons
Obviously, the first role of aprons is protecting your clothes. You wouldn't want to get your school uniform dirty, especially on a Monday when you have a whole week of school to maintain tidiness. Without the apron, you might get some stubborn stains that just won't come off however thoroughly you try to wash up. This might mean buying new school clothes - definitely something you don't want to happen considering the fact that parents spend close to $200 on school uniforms every year (based on a 2013 Back to School Spending Survey by Heritage Bank).
Not just your clothes get protected by the apron. You too need that extra layer of protection, in case hot boiling water spills all over you. A thick strong apron will at least reduce the amount of water that actually gets to your skin and save you from a terrible burn. You'll also avoid medical bills, unless that makes you frown because you don't get a sick day away from school - if that is your idea of a good excuse.
Protecting your clothes and yourself from harm is just one part of it. The other side to this story is that the food you're cooking is also protected from you. That apron serves much the same function as a chef's hat - it keeps obnoxious lint/ fluff from falling onto the food during preparation. That's also one reason, why you shouldn't use the apron for random purposes, since it will pick up dirt, which will inevitably fall onto the food.
