The History of Interior Design in England: 1660-1715

During the late seventeenth century door furniture received a great impetus, no doubt from the immigration of foreign craftsmen such as Tijou, and the dominant French influence under William III. In France the art of the locksmith had been especially esteemed and encouraged. "For several centuries admission to the Guild of Locksmiths could only be obtained by the production of a piece de ifaitrise or chef d'wuzv-e, which took the form of a lock or key upon which one or two years' labour might be expended," and the door fittings of the Gallery d'Apollon were not considered beneath the notice of Le Brun. To this foreign stimulus was due the late reformation and improvement "that Evelyn speaks of in our locksmiths' work . . . who can "produce Works as curious for the filing,-, and admirable for their Dexterity in Contriving as any we meet with abroad; and in particular to our Smiths and Joyners they Excell all other nations whatever."
Before 1660 stock locks were a luxury. They were kept "in the closet," according to the Claydon inventory, and in 1680, when the same London house was to let, it is mentioned that, as the doors were so injured by the putting off and on of locks, they might as well be left on permanently. A fine lock was noticed by Evelyn at Broad Hinton as early as 1654, as an exception "for its filing and rare contrivances a masterpiece, yet made by a country blacksmith," while not many years after there was nothing more frequent, he writes, than "all sorts of iron-work more exquisitely wrought and polished than in any part of Europe, so as a door lock of a tolerable price was esteemed a curiosity even among foreign princes." Under William III, the escutcheons and key-plates of furniture and door fittings began to be treated with even greater elaboration and fancy. King William seems to have taken a special interest in door locks, for at Knole there is a set known to have been presented by him to the Earl of Dorset, and similar locks are found at de Voorst in Holland, which he built for the first Lord Albemarle, and at Zuylestein. Talman probably reflect the taste of his royal master, as we find him (in 1699) showing his anxiety that the locks of the state apartments at Hampton Court " might answer ye rest of ye finishing" and the locks in this room are quite equal in perfection of finish and in the design of the brass-work to those of his protégé, Josiah Key, at Hampton Court. His letter compares the rival merits of Key, "the most ingenious man in Europe," and "Greenaway, his Mat' Locksmith by Warrant," who is "a very dull Smith not brought up to that trade, but of late yeares has taken it up." . . "There is as much difference between the two men in their Art, as between Vulcan and Venus." Talman was successful in recommending his protégé, "the most ingenious man in Europe," for in 1699, Josiah Key, smith, was entered as debtor for work done at Hampton Court to the amount of £800 And Key does not stand alone. There is in the Victoria and Albert Museum a fine iron lock of steel in a brass case, pierced and engraved with floral sprays, the border filled in with leaf ornament, the knobs ribbed, which is signed " Johannes Wilkes de Birmingham fecit," and exactly similar locks, also signed by Wilkes, are at Arbury, in Warwickshire, while the example from Dyrham is of the same high quality.
Box locks of the early eighteenth century are simpler and without the chasing which renders the illustrated examples so attractive. A drop handle often took the place of the knob. To this simple utilitarian pattern Robert Adam introduced a complete change. At this time for the box lock was substituted the mortise lock, and Adam's designs and doors show a handle plate on which the door knob is united to the keyhole by a scroll design in brass, evidently influenced by French designs for handle plates such as those published by Lalonde, a designer of the Louis XVI. Plaster Ceiling and Frieze Decoration: The History of Tudor Period Interior Design 1500-1650 Part 1

Characteristically English is the free floral design, as in the wagon-vaulted gallery at Burton Agnes, which has now fallen into ruins, but a drawing by Richardson preserves the record of a scrolling design of exceptional vigour. In the room at Speke the ceiling area is crossed by large main beams, encased in plaster, and enriched with a running state room from the old Palace, Bromley-by-Bow, Balcarres House in Scotland, and elsewhere. In the Bromley-by-Bow ceiling the centers of six quatrefoils are occupied by medallions bearing the helmeted head and bust of Joshua, Hector of Troy, and Alexander.
The devices on the end of the gallery at Little Moreton Hall, representing the Wheel of Fortune, appear in the Castle of Knowledge, printed by Reynold Wolfe, 1556 At Blickling (1619-20) the gallery ceiling has in the large panels emblematic figures, such as Dolus, of which some appear in Peacham's Minerva Britannia; and in a ceiling in an old house in Gravel Lane, Houndsditch, now demolished, the panels are enriched with moral and religious emblems.
Pendants of various sizes were developed from the conical bosses which served to cover the mitreing of the intersecting ribs, a joint always difficult to the inexpert; and were employed also for their value in enriching and breaking up the surface of the ceiling, especially in the case of monotonous and low-relief strapwork, as in the fish room, Audley End. Certain pendants are in skeleton form, plastered upon an iron core, as in the great chamber at Herringstone, in Dorset.
Plaster was treated with colour and gilding during the Tudor Period, and continued to be coloured in the ensuing period. At Boughton Malherbe the drawing-room, showed a complete colour decoration in the ceiling presumed to be one of the most beautiful specimens of embellishment in the kingdom, the ground is white, and the interlaced pattern blue and reddish brown, judiciously intermingled. The prevalence of colouring is evidenced by the statute of the first years of James I's reign, in which it is enacted that "no plasterer shall exercise the art of a painter in the city or suburbs or lay any colour or painting whatsoever, unless he be a servant or apprentice to a painter, or have served seven years' apprenticeship to that trade."
The undercoating of ceilings enriched with modelled plaster contains an amount of cob and clay bound by brown hair ; and on this is applied ornamental details and a coating of plaster probably compounded in the following manner: Lumps of lime were slaked with water, and "as the lime slacked more water was added and the face of the heap smoothed over: as the heat increased this face cracked, but was again and again smoothed over keeping the heat in until the slacking process was completed." This slaked lime was kept at least twelve or eighteen months before use, and was then mixed with silver or light-coloured sand and plenty of white hair.

In these situations local council representatives have the responsibility of clearing the way. It is not however there responsibility to clear up an accident in the workplace and in these situations a team of first aiders may need to help.
One of the first jobs to do is to make the area as safe as possible. The last thing anyone would want is another accident occurring, and therefore efforts should be made to clear up any hazardous materials. This may involve making calls to waste disposal experts or local tradesman. A good example of this is in the event of someone being electrocuted. The History of Cupboards and Buffets: Tudor Period 1660-1770

The word cupboard was first used to designate the board on which cups were set. In Belshazzar's feast in the Bible Historiale an enclosed Linenfold cupboard is figured, where the cupboard cloth is shown hanging down on either side, and upon which flagons and plates are set. In the houses of the wealthy, it was a structure with many steps or shelves upon which plate was displayed. The splendor and number of shelves or stages was answerable to the dignity of the owner, to judge from the description of royal festivities. At the wedding of Prince Arthur, eldest son of Henry VII., with Katherine of Aragon, a triangular cupboard five stages high was set with plate at Westminster Hall, and Hall records that at the coronation of Anne Boleyn there was at Westminster Hall a great cupboard of ten stages high, which was "filled with gold plate most marvelous to behold." These cupboards stood in a conspicuous place, as in the recess formed by the bay window in the hall. In Holbein's sketch of the 'More Family' a cupboard with plate displayed is shown, which has a projecting crested canopy reaching to the ceiling.
There are a certain number of hutch-like structures dating from the late fifteenth century, such as the example which stands in front of the screen at Ockwells. Entirely distinct from the imposing staged cupboards, they are supported on tall quadrangular legs, and differ only from the hutch in having an over sailing top, which can be extended at each end, and is supported by brackets. In the example at Ockwells the centre door and flanking panels are carved with linenfold ornament. A second buffet in the same collection, opening in front with a central door and supported by baluster-shaped scaled legs, gains additional height from its platform. The front is divided into three panels bordered with wide and well-defined reed mouldings; the cornice is carved with upright leaves, while the double-twist roping round the lower rail, the beautiful perforated ornament of the two depressed arches (which are divided by a pendant), the leaf ornament within the triangular compartments decorating the styles are characteristically Gothic. This remarkable buffet dates from the first quarter of the sixteenth century.
Cupboards are inventoried in many rooms besides the hall, where the favourite position was the bay window. A number must have been in use in the hall of large households, since cupboards were not only required for plate and earthenware, but for the glasses and cups, which it was customary to set not on the board but on the cupboard. Each one called "for a cup of such drink as him listeth to have, so that when he hath tasted it, he delivered the cup again to some one of the standers by, who, making it clean again by pouring out the drink that remained, restored it to the cupboard from whence he fetched the same." From the second part of the sixteenth century two main types of standing furniture for the dining-room were evolved, firstly, a buffet open on all sides, with carved front supports ; and secondly, an enclosed cupboard with doors. In the first or dinner wagon type, the back supports are plainly treated, and were doubtless hidden by silver vessels and plate. The platform is plain, and was originally covered by a carpet, which accompanies the cupboard in inventories. There are fine examples of this type in Eastgate House, Rochester, and in the hall of Christ Church, Oxford, and also at Ockwells. In the latter example, which is of walnut, the second and third tier is supported by cup and cover bulbous supports; the top affords room for a drawer, which is inlaid with a geometrical pattern, while the central platform allows a deep drawer, which is richly carved; while the bottom rail is inlaid with two rows of chequer work. In the well-preserved example, which came originally from a royal hunting lodge, the supports are the Tudor royal supporters, the lion and dragon. A standing cupboard dating from about 1530 is a plain, well-finished piece, entirely unornamented but for the carved busts in high relief, cut almost entirely from the solid, which have the appearance of portraits. On the central door between the two heads is, also in high relief, a tune or barrel, upon which is carved a flower, and the initials A. W., a rebus to which there is no clue.
The type of the enclosed cupboard most usually met with in the late sixteenth century is in two stages. The upper stage, which is recessed, and has a ledge upon which cups or plate could be displayed, is often semi-hexagonal in plan, and the roof is supported by detached bulbous supports or balusters at each end, forming a canopy. In some late examples pendants take the place of the bulbous forms and balusters. These two types were in use in the hall and dining parlor. In the second half of the seventeenth century a number of enclosed cupboards of great- width, carved with shallow stock patterns, were made, many of which are dated.
Intermediate between the open buffet and the enclosed cupboard is the type in which the upper stage alone is enclosed, as in the example from the Metropolitan Museum, New York. The upper stage, which is three-sided, has a central inlaid door; the inlaid frieze is interrupted by carved corbels and supported by large cup and cover supports, while the lower stage, in which the frieze forms a drawer, is open.
The most usual term for cupboards from about 1586 onwards is court cupboards, which were structures garnished with plate, " planted " (as Chapman writes) " with flagons, cans, cups, beakers, bowls, goblets, basins, and ewers," and covered with a cupboard cloth. According to Fuller, glasses succeeded both for use and ornament "when plate, the principal, is otherwise disposed of." The evidence as to whether the term covers the "dinner-wagon" structure, the partly or wholly enclosed cupboard, or a structure distinct from either, is well set out in Lyon's Colonial Furniture in New England. A recently printed inventory of bedding ton in the time of Sir Francis Carew (1596) includes, however, a court cupboard with two drawers and locks to them."
In old inventories the term "livery" is frequently used for that cupboard in which the household would put away "every one of them for his livery at night, half a Chet loaf, one quart of wine, one gallon of ale, and for winter livery . . . one percher candle or candle wax." In great houses, the livery was "said to be served up for all night, that is, their nights allowance for drink." From a reference in the contract made by Sir Thomas Kitson of Hengrave, it appears that the livery cupboards were to be made without doors, indeed the contract so defines them, but other references indicate that some livery cupboards were enclosed as they possess locks and keys and drawers or ambries.
Certain food cupboards, too, are enclosed, and are distinguished by window-like openings or perforations in the doors, the fixed front, or the ends, to give ventilation to the stored victuals. Hanging or standing food cupboards, their fronts either pierced with holes, forming a diaper pattern, or having turned bars or balusters to allow of ventilation, are scarce, and there are still fewer survivals of dole or bread cupboards in churches. In the south transept of St Albans Abbey church are three such cupboards, of which the finest dates from the reign of Charles I. In the Church of All Saints, Hereford, the open dole-shelves, which are dated 1683, are surmounted by pinnacles and a strap work cresting. The dresser, a provincial development of the cupboard, was formerly found in every kitchen and farmhouse from the second half of the seventeenth century. It is furnished with drawers and supported by turned legs; the tall back, resting against the wall, is provided with a superstructure with shelves for the household pewter or earthenware.

About Screw Gauges
Screw gauges were invented more than 400 years ago by William Gascoigne, a British Astronomer who came up with the screw gauge as a means of measuring the stars. Since then screw gauges have been used for many different applications and today they are most commonly used to measure the diameter of wires, but no matter what the screw gauge is being used for, the principle behind the tool remains the same - To accurately measure the distance between the spindle and the anvil on the screw gauge when it's applied to an object.
How to use a Screw Gauge
1. On the interior of the anvil you will find a U shaped frame. Place the wire that needs measuring up against the anvil.
2. At the furthest distance from the U frame on the end of the spindle cylinder you will find the screw gauge ratchet. In order for the spindle (the metal cylinder that moves towards the U frame) to move towards the anvil the ratchet must be turned in a clockwise direction.
3. Turn the ratchet until the wire is pressed between the anvil and the spindle. When the wire is adequately sandwiched between the two the ratchet will click and the spindle will not be able to move any further.
4. To determine the diameter of the wire look for the horizontal scale measurement that lines up with the spindle. Note down the last number you can see on the edge of the thimble.
5. Look for the vertical scale measurement on the thimble. You will see a horizontal line that married up to the vertical scale. Note down this number.
6. On the thimble you will find the vertical scale measurement. Note down this number.
7. Finally you need to add these numbers together according to the respective subdivision of scale found on the screw gauge. On an imperial scale the measurement is normally accurate to a thousandth of an inch.
About Thread Gauges
As with screw gauges, there are several different types of thread gauge used for different purposes. Most commonly a thread gauge can be used for checking the diameter and thread angle of a screw thread, determining or checking the pitch and measuring screw threads.
How to use a Thread Gauge
1. Hold the bolt you need to measure in one hand. Make sure there's plenty of light so you can read the measurement.
2. Open up the gauge and place a blade alongside the bolt threads. If the teeth on the blade don't fit securely select another one until the bolt threads and the teeth fit together snugly.

How to use a Screw Gauge
1. On the interior of the anvil you will find a U shaped frame. Place the wire that needs measuring up against the anvil.
2. At the furthest distance from the U frame on the end of the spindle cylinder you will find the screw gauge ratchet. In order for the spindle (the metal cylinder that moves towards the U frame) to move towards the anvil the ratchet must be turned in a clockwise direction.
3. Turn the ratchet until the wire is pressed between the anvil and the spindle. When the wire is adequately sandwiched between the two the ratchet will click and the spindle will not be able to move any further.
4. To determine the diameter of the wire look for the horizontal scale measurement that lines up with the spindle. Note down the last number you can see on the edge of the thimble.
5. Look for the vertical scale measurement on the thimble. You will see a horizontal line that married up to the vertical scale. Note down this number.
6. On the thimble you will find the vertical scale measurement. Note down this number.
7. Finally you need to add these numbers together according to the respective subdivision of scale found on the screw gauge. On an imperial scale the measurement is normally accurate to a thousandth of an inch.

The early Georgian style-although so little due to the personal influence of the first two Hanoverian kings-coincides closely with their reigns, and covers the space of forty years between about 1720 and 1760 George I.-who, as we are told, had no regard for the English and was almost entirely ignorant of the language-certainly never attempted any encouragement of the arts in England but through no merit of his, the definitely Georgian style in architecture and decoration developed not long after his accession, and continued through the reign of the second George until the innovations of Robert Adam, which were almost exactly coincident with the accession of George III. The name, therefore, may be considered as marking a date.
The wealthy and cultured class was a comparatively large one in England compared with the other nations_ of Europe. Defoe's tour leaves a strong impression of the wealth that had come to the country since the Revolution. There was an extraordinary extension of commerce and enterprise, and the merchants of Turkey, East India, and the South Sea became increasingly influential. The Army and Navy, which became permanent institutions early in the eighteenth century, contributed to the stability of trade abroad, and the foundation of the Bank of England was a landmark -in the financial history of the country. One of the greatest houses in England, Wanted, was built by the parvenu Sir- Richard Child, and Bubb Dodington's town and country houses appear to have been among the finest of the period. "All the world was mad on building as far as they could reach" as Vanbrugh tells his friend Lord Carlisle in 1721, and this limit was often over-stepped, since we hear of many who over-built themselves and whose houses remained unfinished, or were sold for the sake of their building materials.
That the reigning style should be Italian is due to the influence of the ever-increasing number of aristocratic amateurs who made the Grand Tour in the peaceful days of the early George's. It would be difficult to over-estimate the importance of this class, both as patrons and leaders of fashion, at a time when a knowledge of architecture was no uncommon accomplishment among men of leisure. The Englishman of this class was to a great extent thrown back upon the patronage and enjoyment of art if he happened to have tastes above the fox-hunting Squire Westerns of the day, or took no part in politics.
A political career was, indeed, almost impossible under the jealous domination of Sir Robert Walpole, while under that great peace minister there was small chance of a military one. But there remained art-in a wide sense including the study of architecture, the gathering of a collection of pictures (preferably Italian), the patronage of artists and singers and of architects, the building of a great house which should be a monument, a magnum opus. Vanbrugh's patrons, the Earl of Manchester and the Duke of Marlborough, who were abroad on public business in the early years of the eighteenth century, showed their practical interest in the furnishing and building of their houses in their correspondence. But the amateur and the amateur architect of the early Georgian period were much more influential. Of Henry, ninth Earl of Pembroke" who had some claim to be considered an amateur architect, Hoarse Walpole wrote that "no man had a purer taste in building." Lord Burlington spent "large sums in contributing to public works, and was known to choose that the expense should fall on himself rather than that his country should be deprived of some beautiful edifice." His enthusiasm involved him in debt, and this was also the case with the less magnificent Sir Thomas Robinson of Rokeby-" Long Sir Thomas " another devout Palladian and amateur architect, who rebuilt the mansion of Rokeby. Both these men designed buildings; while there ii no design to the credit of Thomas Coke, the first Lord Leicester, who, however, had "such a delight and passion for architecture," says Brettingham, to fifty thousand pounds' expense, and some others of less value: This was our joint study and amusement in the country." Lord Chesterfield again spent both his time and money on the building of Chesterfield House in South Audley Street, where he boasted that the Library was the finest room in London. But besides these well-known personages the less famous amateurs had a voice in the building of their houses, for "in England, more than in any other country, every man would fain be his own architect," and the result is a very individual and personal quality in great and small English houses.
The reign of George I. was the beginning of the spread of the Grand Tour. Before that time it had been restricted to the few; about 1740, as Lady Pomfret writes, it was "carried a great deal too far amongst the English," and had become a necessity, the usual completion of the education of a gentleman.
The renewal of peace had given the eldest son his chance of foreign travel in France and Italy. Thomas Coke was sent at the age of fifteen on his travels, which lasted six years.` Lord Burlington was completing his education in Italy at the same time. A little later Horace Walpole, at the age of twenty-two, went with a party of friends, in 1739, to Paris, Rheims, Geneva, Turin, Florence, Rome, Venice, and the south of France. France and Italy were the attractions of the "politer parts of Europe" to the travellers, and their stay was generally a prolonged one in the cities of Northern Italy Venice and Florence. Some of the less carefully conducted young men, as Chesterfield wrote, saw nothing but the English worlds abroad, and came home at three or four and twenty refined and polished (as is said in one of Congreve's plays) like Dutch skippers from a whale-fishing_ ; but in more favourable cases the Grand Tour was so protracted that it is not sur­prising that the young English­men learned something of art and architecture, and developed the habit of collecting pictures, statues, or curiosities, of viewing Italy " Knick - knackically," a danger against which Chesterfield warned . his son. For their descendants the taste has been a distinct ad­vantage, for the tour was respon­sible for the formation of the great private collections, which were and are still a feature of the great houses of the Georgian period. The taste for Italian music and Italian singers was one result of the tour.

The Army and Navy, which became permanent institutions early in the eighteenth century, contributed to the stability of trade abroad, and the foundation of the Bank of England was a landmark -in the financial history of the country. One of the greatest houses in England, Wanted, was built by the parvenu Sir- Richard Child, and Bubb Dodington's town and country houses appear to have been among the finest of the period. "All the world was mad on building as far as they could reach" as Vanbrugh tells his friend Lord Carlisle in 1721, and this limit was often over-stepped, since we hear of many who over-built themselves and whose houses remained unfinished, or were sold for the sake of their building materials.
That the reigning style should be Italian is due to the influence of the ever-increasing number of aristocratic amateurs who made the Grand Tour in the peaceful days of the early George's. It would be difficult to over-estimate the importance of this class, both as patrons and leaders of fashion, at a time when a knowledge of architecture was no uncommon accomplishment among men of leisure. The Englishman of this class was to a great extent thrown back upon the patronage and enjoyment of art if he happened to have tastes above the fox-hunting Squire Westerns of the day, or took no part in politics.
A political career was, indeed, almost impossible under the jealous domination of Sir Robert Walpole, while under that great peace minister there was small chance of a military one. But there remained art-in a wide sense including the study of architecture, the gathering of a collection of pictures (preferably Italian), the patronage of artists and singers and of architects, the building of a great house which should be a monument, a magnum opus. Vanbrugh's patrons, the Earl of Manchester and the Duke of Marlborough, who were abroad on public business in the early years of the eighteenth century, showed their practical interest in the furnishing and building of their houses in their correspondence. But the amateur and the amateur architect of the early Georgian period were much more influential. Of Henry, ninth Earl of Pembroke" who had some claim to be considered an amateur architect, Hoarse Walpole wrote that "no man had a purer taste in building." Lord Burlington spent "large sums in contributing to public works, and was known to choose that the expense should fall on himself rather than that his country should be deprived of some beautiful edifice." His enthusiasm involved him in debt, and this was also the case with the less magnificent Sir Thomas Robinson of Rokeby-" Long Sir Thomas " another devout Palladian and amateur architect, who rebuilt the mansion of Rokeby. Both these men designed buildings; while there ii no design to the credit of Thomas Coke, the first Lord Leicester, who, however, had "such a delight and passion for architecture," says Brettingham, to fifty thousand pounds' expense, and some others of less value: This was our joint study and amusement in the country." Lord Chesterfield again spent both his time and money on the building of Chesterfield House in South Audley Street, where he boasted that the Library was the finest room in London. But besides these well-known personages the less famous amateurs had a voice in the building of their houses, for "in England, more than in any other country, every man would fain be his own architect," and the result is a very individual and personal quality in great and small English houses.
The reign of George I. was the beginning of the spread of the Grand Tour. Before that time it had been restricted to the few; about 1740, as Lady Pomfret writes, it was "carried a great deal too far amongst the English," and had become a necessity, the usual completion of the education of a gentleman.
The renewal of peace had given the eldest son his chance of foreign travel in France and Italy. Thomas Coke was sent at the age of fifteen on his travels, which lasted six years.` Lord Burlington was completing his education in Italy at the same time. A little later Horace Walpole, at the age of twenty-two, went with a party of friends, in 1739, to Paris, Rheims, Geneva, Turin, Florence, Rome, Venice, and the south of France. France and Italy were the attractions of the "politer parts of Europe" to the travellers, and their stay was generally a prolonged one in the cities of Northern Italy Venice and Florence. Some of the less carefully conducted young men, as Chesterfield wrote, saw nothing but the English worlds abroad, and came home at three or four and twenty refined and polished (as is said in one of Congreve's plays) like Dutch skippers from a whale-fishing_ ; but in more favourable cases the Grand Tour was so protracted that it is not sur­prising that the young English­men learned something of art and architecture, and developed the habit of collecting pictures, statues, or curiosities, of viewing Italy " Knick - knackically," a danger against which Chesterfield warned . his son. For their descendants the taste has been a distinct ad­vantage, for the tour was respon­sible for the formation of the great private collections, which were and are still a feature of the great houses of the Georgian period. The taste for Italian music and Italian singers was one result of the tour.

He made another journey to Italy in 1730. By the patronage of the Queen, of the Dukes of Grafton and Newcastle, and of Henry Pelham, and by the interest of his friend, "he was made master carpenter, architect, keeper of the pictures, and, after the death of Gervas, principal painter to the Crown ; the whole, including a pension of ,6 loo a year, which was given him for his works at Kensington, producing £600 a year." He was buried by his own desire in Lord Burlington's family vault at Chiswick Church, and from his will we know that he had a house in Sackville Street, and that he was on friendly terms with the Boyle, Cavendish, and Pelham families, to whom he leaves many pictures and objets d'art. Elizabeth Butler, the "actress with whom he had long lived in terms of peculiar friendship," of the parish of St Paul, Covent Garden, is given the sum of £600; his sister an annuity of £50, while the rest of his estate is divided between his nephew and nieces.
With his architecture, his innovations in warden design, his pictures (which found small favour with such diverse critics as Howarth, Hoarse Walpole and Lord Chesterfield) we are not here concerned, but solely with his decorations. He decorated not only buildings which he designed such as Holkham, the Chiswick Villa, Devonshire House, Worcester Lodge, and the wings of Rousham, a house for Mr Pelham in Arlington Street (now the Earl of Yarborough's), a house in Berkeley Square for Lady Isabella Finch (No. 44) but was responsible for certain rooms at Kensington Palace and Hampton Court, for alterations to Raynham (which Sir Thomas Robinson, writing in 1731, described as having been "lately sashed and prettily ornamented on the inside by Mr Kent"), for additions and decorations at Badminton and Stowe, and the interior of Houghton. Other houses which were not decorated by him had chimneypieces of his design, such as Easton Neston.) Two of his designs for decoration are illustrated, a sketch for the library at Holkharn, and one for the cube or cupola room in Kensington Palace (Fig. 12), of which the ceiling was finished in 1722. Like Robert Adam, Kent set his stamp upon the entire decoration of his period, and became a designer of ornament of every kind: His style, says Walpole, pre­dominated authoritatively during his life. He was consulted not only for furniture but for plate, for a cradle, for a barge. He was the fashionable oracle, and so " impetuous " was the fashion that two great ladies prevailed on him to make designs for their birthday gowns. "The one he dressed in a petticoat decorated with columns of the five orders, the other like a bronze, in copper-coloured satin with ornaments of gold."
That his style predominated is the more surprising when we consider the small number of houses he decorated. Even before his death, the rococo style (in which he had never designed) to a great extent superseded his manner; but the early designs of Robert Adam, who returned to England a decade after Kent's death, are so closely allied to his that it is quite possible to consider the younger man as his successor in the English tradition, leaving on one side fashions such as the Chinese and the revived Gothic. Indeed there is less divergence between the decoration of Kent and Adam than there is between the Adam of 176o, and of 1780 when, by the aid of his Italian assistants and other influences, he had developed the style by which he is now invariably known and judged, the style of `f filagraine and fan-painting' criticised by Horace NN,' alpole, whose taste had been formed on " Kent and grandeur."
The Palladians followed Inigo Jones, with his few and supreme achievements in domestic architecture. The interior decoration of Wren, like his architecture, was not adopted, partly because there was a tendency in men like Colin Campbell to discredit his architectural work. Vanbrugh stands between the two schools, but, though showing the influence of the eighteenth century in the secondary position of wainscot in decoration, he had little influence upon the Palladians. His manner was too massive and theatrical for their taste, his detail too coarse. In the hands of Kent the interior decoration is modelled very closely upon that of Inigo Jones, while in the hands of Gibbs, ornament was left to the taste of Italian plasterers, and was therefore not scholarly and eclectic, but contemporary and rococo.
The early Georgian style, though not so familiar as that of Wren, is well represented. Among small houses, a very complete and richly-treated house is the Countess of Suffolk's villa at Twickenham, Marble Hill, built for her in 1724, probably by Robert Morris. It has also, in its richest form, its monuments in the practically untouched interiors of Holkham and Houghton among great houses, and many minor buildings. It is indicated in contemporary art, and very thoroughly rendered by Hogarth, who, besides recording the spirit of his age, is pre-eminently successful in preserving its fashions and furniture. Of the vanished great houses, such as Wanstead and Bubb Dodington's palaces at Eastbury and Hammersmith, we get a fainter picture in the contemporary literature. It so happens that Hogarth has given us few satisfactory interiors. In some cases, so anxious is he to drive home his moral, all we see is a wall crowded with very symbolic pictures. But the famous second scene of Marriage a: la mode (Fig. 8), which is said to have been painted from a house in Arlington Street, is an authoritative document. This picture, painted in 1749, is said by Mr Austin Dobson to "satirise the style of William Kent, both in its furniture and decorations." Hogarth represents a fine room, divided into two by an arch supported by dark blue marble pillars, which is spoilt by absurd ornaments, "tods and fat squabs" that are crowded on the severely classic chimneypiece, and the amazing clock,' a nondescript affair which carica­tures the worst moments of the English rococo. The furniture, which is plain, bears no resem­blance to Kent's (which is essentially decorated), and it has been suggested, with great probability, that though Hogarth drew the room from Arlington Street, the chairs were probably his own, as and not the classic, and Mr Dobson is quite mistaken in his inference.

If you were hoping to try out Paris' high-speed travelator at Montparnasse-Bienvenue Metro, there's bad news. It's been shut down and replaced with a conventional walkway. Introduced in 2002, the walkway had a speed of 7 mph that was quickly reduced to 6 mph because walkers kept falling over as they adjusted to the speedier pace. Then the travelator kept breaking down. In 2011, a conventional walkway was put in its place. If moving walkways are your thing, take at look at Charles de Gaulle International Airport that has walkways inside a series of suspended tubes.
5. Meeting Spot
If you're in the Latin quarter and need to meet someone, the hot meeting spot is Fontaine St Michel. And if your friend is running late, there are plenty of people watching opportunities available to keep you occupied. Other popular Parisian meeting spots include the Opera Bastille stairs or Victor Hugo's old home, Place des Vosges.

The Growth of Yixing Made Possible By Its Artists
The art of making teapots is big in China. Not only is tea such a big hit in China, but teapots possess such huge artistic value on this side of the globe. Because of this, Chinese pots go beyond your typical teapot. This is especially so with Yixing, arguably the most valuable of all teapots to come out of the Chinese subcontinent. The level of artistry that goes into these pots is top-notch to say the least, and has made legends out of men coming from different generations in history. As such, the artistic tradition of Yixing runs very deep.
The history of Yixing teapots actually stretch as early as the 10th century during the rule of the Song dynasty. In fact, some artifacts have been unearthed and discovered to have an age of a millennium. There used to be a time that these pots are solely used for utilitarian purposes, which is to keep tea. But during the Ming dynasty, something happened. Yixing teapots are suddenly considered as an art form, and the art of tea drinking in China was changed forever along with it.
It's been disputed who is the one who really started the trend of making artwork out of teapots. But history points that it's Gong Chun also known as Gong Gong Chun, that first started the art of making Yixing teapots. A former servant, he knew about Yixing clay when a monk at a temple he visited presented him a unique teapot. He was impressed with the quality of tea produced using that pot, and he later asked the monk to teach him how to make them. He studied the monks abilities and collected scraps of clay to fshion his own pot. Once he had mastered how to make them, he introduced teapots made from Zisha clay to the public. The people immediately recognized the level of artistry it had and the quality of tea it produced, and the rest is history. For his efforts, Gong Chun is widely considered to be the first master of Yixing teapot making.
Over the next centuries, more masters emerged into the scene, with each of them taking the art of making Yixing pots to the next level. The next leap of growth for this now-burgeoning craft occurred during the Qing dynasty. During this era, the Yixing teapot had become a full-fledged work of art, with people more than willing to pay a huge sum to get the best handiwork from the masters. Some of the masters who made their name during this era include Cheng Ming Yuan, Cheng Man Shen, Shao Da Heng, and Huang Yu Ling. Not only did these masters make a lot of elite-level pots that exemplified the creative spirit of Yixing clay pots, but they also trained more experts who would lead the way in further expanding the craft of teapot making.
Over the centuries, the craft of making Yixing teapots expanded by leaps and bounds. Not only has it given birth to craftsmen, but occasionally it has also given birth to legends. The creativity and mastery these experts pour into these works of art is novel. Yixing will continually grow as long as these craftsmen continue to hone their craft.
