10 Steps To Felling A Tree

Before becoming a qualified tree surgeon you need to learn a lot about the process of felling a tree. Here are 10 quick steps to how a tree is felled.

1. Check Your Equipment

Before any job is started, the tree surgeon must ensure they have all the correct equipment in order to fell a tree. This includes safety gear such as hardhat and goggles; ropes and harnesses and machinery.

2. Mark Out The Drop Zone And Escape Route

Felling is a one-person operation, so once the equipment has been checked, the surgeon completing the felling must assess and mark out the drop zone and escape route.

3. Assess The Area

The area around the tree you wish to fell must be assessed before the job is carried out. This includes looking for any overhead or underground services such as gas, electricity and water.

4. Inspect The Tree

It's best if a trees bark is bare before the tree is felled. This is because it reduces the possibility of any damage to any other trees nearby or the ground. Inspect the tree for dead wood, insecure branches and any signs of decay.

5. Preparing The tree

Once you have assessed the area, outlined the drop zone and escape routes and checked your equipment, you are ready to fell a tree - well almost! First you need to prep the tree. This means making two sink cuts into the side of the tree. This creates a hinge for which the tree to lean on during the main felling cut.

6. Making The Main Felling Cut

Once the two sink cuts have been made, you're ready to make the main felling cut. This should be made either at or slightly above the level of the bottom sink cut. If there is a possibility of the tree moving, use appropriate aid tools to stabilise the tree.

7. Removing A Jam

Most tree surgeons will use a chainsaw to fell a tree as it is the most efficient tool to use. However they can get jammed in the tree itself. The best way to deal with this is to switch the chainsaw off and slowly pull it to see if it can be dislodged. If not, use the appropriate aid tools to open the cut and pull the saw out.

8. Using A Breaking Bar

A breaking bar is an essential aid tool to use whilst felling a tree. A breaking bar puts pressure on the tree on the opposite side of the direction of fall. When using it, keep your back straight and use your legs to lift to build more pressure on the tree.

9. Hung-Up Trees

Make every effort to remove hung-up trees before you leave the area. Hun-up trees pose great danger to other trees as well as any passer-by's. If you cannot remove the hung-up tree, establish adequate exclusion zones and leave the area until the tree is dealt with.

10. Manual Takedown

Always assess the tree again before taking down the tree manually. Decide the safest and most effective method you can use to take down the tree.

When rolling trees to fell, use a pushing movement. If using a pole, let go of it as soon as the tree begins to fall.

Following these steps will help you on your way to becoming a skilful tree surgeon. There is a lot more that you will need to know before you can qualify, but the steps behind felling a tree are necessary information.
