Using A Chainsaw For Tree Work

Chainsaws are large, noisy and dangerous tools. But they are the best tools to use when working with trees, which is why they're the tool of choice for most tree surgeons. As they are extremely dangerous, chainsaws cannot be used without training or guidance and must be maintained regularly.

Training To Use A Chainsaw

Specialist instructors should carry out training during organised courses. This is the best way to learn how to correctly use a chainsaw and the appropriate techniques for using a chainsaw with trees. Most tree surgery companies employ those who gain experience whilst on the job, and so whilst training to use a chainsaw, trainees must be supervised by a competent, experienced tree surgeon. All surgeons using chainsaws should regularly refresh their training to ensure they are working to industry standards. Suggested intervals for training are:

Occasional users - every two to three years

Full-time users - every five years.

Selecting A Chainsaw

There are two basic designs of chainsaws, these are 'Rear-handled' and 'Top-handled'. Depending on what work you are using them for, it may be you need to use a specific model.

Rear-handled - these saws are designed for versatility and are beginner friendly. The rear-handle saw is generally the most popular saw as it is easy to manipulate and performs at the highest level even in the hands of beginners. Rear-handles are designed for felling and bucking wood.

Top-handled - these saws are widely used by tree surgeons and are only allowed to be used off ground by trained and competent arborists. These saws allow the user to control the direction and operation of the saw.

Maintaining A Chainsaw

Chainsaws require regular maintenance for safe use and protection against ill health from excessive noise and vibration. Specialist instructors can service saws, and they must ensure the saw is in manufactured condition. This means the safety devices must all be in working order, with all guards in place.

Chainsaw Blades

Chainsaw blades have to be strong, sharp and durable to cut through all types of tough tree bark. As they are used to cut extremely tough materials, blades are susceptible to blunting easily, and at times breaking completely. Those operating chainsaws need to be trained in the correct chain sharpening techniques, as well as understanding how to keep the chain and guide bar maintained.

There are many different chainsaw brands; sizes and prices to choose from and to ensure you're using the right one for you, research as many as you can. Following these tips will give you the knowledge on what needs to be considered before, during and after using a chainsaw, and how to stay safe when using such a dangerous tool.
