Pruning large and heavy branches has a different technique, as pruning these incorrectly can leave the tree with permanent damage. Unlike pruning a bud or a branch you must use more than one cut. The first should be on the underside of the branch half way down, with the second being cut directly over the first on the other side. Pruning this way ensures the bark from the main tree stays in tact when the branch is cut.
