Storm Survival Tips

Here are some things you can do before the storm hits.

Monitor the news or your local weather station, radio station or smart phone for updates on the storm situation, when it will hit and how strong it will be. You can even get text alerts for what is going to be happening.

You should move to higher ground. You will need to move away from bodies of water such as creeks, streams, rivers, as well as storm drains. Flash floods can move over an entire area without any warning, and you might only have a few minutes to get to safety.

Just remember that flash floods can happen up to 12 hours after very heavy rains so even if the storm is over you still need to be on high alert for storm swells.

Move your pets or any livestock if you live on a farm to higher ground, keep pets inside.

Move your valuable such as jewelry or family heirloom to higher floors of your home, if possible to prevent any damage. You should make sure your rain gutters on the roof are clear of leaves and debris. That is especially important to do in and after the fall season which is when most leaves fall.

You may also opt to park your cars on higher ground. If you live in a low lying area you car can easily get flooded and it is often not covered by insurance to repair the flood damage. You should opt to leave some of your valuable at a place of a loved one who is not at a flood-prone area.

Stock up on emergency supplies as well as food and water by buying an emergency food storage kit.. Fill up clean plastic bottles with pure water and put in as much water as you can, especially if you are in a flood-prone city. Charge all essential electronics like smartphones and laptops, which you will have to use in case of emergencies. Be sure to have anemergency preparedness kit with medical supplies as well.

Prepare your escape routes from your home or city. Practice with your family members what you will do in case of a flash flood. Do some saftey drills beforehand. Map out the safest routes as well as alternative routes where you can get from your office to your work. Coordinate with your friends and neighbors, in case of extreme floods. Make sure you have all of your neighbor's contact info as well so you can easily reach them Figure out how you can get from your location to safer ground.
