Formal Classroom Settings:
In some cases, the best way to learn French is in a formal classroom setting. This is ideal for those who work best with an instructor and other students.
Many high schools and colleges offer formal French classes to students. In the classroom, students will have the opportunity to learn reading, writing and speaking. The particular method of teaching in a classroom setting varies based on the specific teacher, but it will usually have spoken lessens, written activities, reading comprehension activities and partner activities that give the opportunity to learn all forms of French.
The activities with a partner give students a chance to understand the vocabulary and sentence structures learned in class while the spoken lessons performed by the whole class strive to improve pronunciation.
Learning French in a formal classroom setting has a wide range of benefits and downfalls. The problem with learning in a class is that it does not work for every individual. Some students will find that the other students are distracting or will not like the teaching style of the instructor.
Online or Computer Lessons:
Another method of learning French is taking an online course or using a computer software program designed to teach the lessons. This is the ideal solution for those who struggle in a formal classroom setting as a result of other students or teaching styles.
The online lessons and computer software programs have set guidelines. Students complete one lesson at a time and learn the reading and writing of the language. In some cases, the software program or online lesson will require speaking aloud and listening, but this varies by particular lesson and program.
The programs that require speaking activities will use a headset with a microphone. The word, phrase or sentence is repeated after the program to help work on pronunciation. In this situation, the computer program will give a result based on the accuracy of the pronunciation. If it needs improvement, it will show where the sound was wrong so that changes are made and will ask for the student to repeat the phrase, sentence or word.
The online or software lessons are useful in cases where online learning is preferred. The lessons proceed at a pace set by the individual and it is possible to repeat lessons that are difficult to understand.
The major downside of computer or software lessons is the lack of a real instructor. Questions either go unanswered or take time before a reply arrives, making it less convenient when real-time questions come up during the lessons.
Learning a new language is a process that takes time, but with the help of a teacher or a suitable program it is possible to learn at a faster rate. Learning French is useful for communication, business and travel. Whether the goal is learning for personal interest or for a particular purpose like an upcoming trip to a French speaking nation, learning a new language is an enjoyable challenge.
