How Speed Reading Tactics Can Help You

If you have a job or no matter what you do, learning various speed reading strategies will improve your life in many ways. This is one of those skills that can be effectively learned and used in various degrees almost regardless of your age. The basis for speed reading is similar across the board, and so that's one thing to keep in mind with software programs. The return on your efforts will be hard to calculate because you never know how it can change your life.

Especially in the beginning of your speed reading training, you'll find that your eyes and mind will get easily tired. This depends on certain factors, such as the condition of your eyes and how often you usually read. It's important to listen to your body as you read, and not push yourself too hard. Keep in mind that this skill does require you to put in some work, but you should also make sure you take breaks at regular intervals. Since you have to get yourself used to reading in a new way, you have to expect a certain amount of discomfort at first. The harder you work, the faster your progress will be. One way to help your eyes to relax is by using alternate muscles. Focusing your eyes on something far off every so often is a good way to give them a break from the exercise you're doing.

Get in the habit of looking over a book you want to read, and you can just do a basic skim of it. They are actually not the same thing even though they're used interchangeably, plus as you are previewing you can scan the appropriate material in the book or whatever you're reading. This is an excellent way to build a hierarchy in your mind that serves useful purposes. You can perform this each time you read a book or anytime you want.

Book previews are a technique that can make reading any book a lot simpler. Before reading the actual book, go over the table of contents, back cover and any forward or introduction.

This way, your mind has formed an outline of what the book contains. Some people call this building a database of the material and that's an accurate way to look at it. You'll make associations between the material and what you read in the preview stage. This is in addition to any associations that were set off when you did the book preview. In each stage, you'll have a chance to connect one piece of knowledge with another. So when you read the book, a lot of it will seem familiar to you and this helps you increase your reading speed.

You can easily imagine how much more work you can get done if you can read two or three times faster. Set a schedule for working on this, and you a can make progress on an hour a day. This is probably one of the easier ways to really boost your abilities and skills, so it's worth doing.
