Atomic Nevada

On July 16, 1945, the United States conducted the first nuclear detonation test at the 'Trinity' site in New Mexico and thus began a long history of atomic science and testing within the United States borders. Now, in 2012, there is a dedicated repository for the collected nuclear history of the country. As a preservation measure, many accessories and artifacts have been placed in this repository - video footage, photographs, scientific documentation, and collections belonging to various scientists from history. All of this can be observed in one single location only - the National Atomic Testing Museum in Nevada.

The museum was created as an act of preservation; the museum has worked hard to preserve and collect as much information about the atomic history of America as possible; history that has been ongoing for decades now. Here you will find information regarding the cold war era, the Nevada testing grounds, and many facets of nuclear and radiological technology and science. Permanent collections are always available to those visiting, and the museum augments those with changing temporary exhibits that are periodically showcased. The permanent collection is vast with over 12,000 artifacts that are displayed in an educational, time-line style that outlines the history of a nuclear bomb beginning with the theorizing, development, and testing, which follows the time-line through to today's most recent capabilities and breakthroughs.

Exhibits at the museum are sectioned with categories for radiation, atmospheric tests, underground tests, development, a theater designed to simulate a test, development of the first ever bomb, and an exhibit on the impact of atomic science on our culture throughout history. One may also download a podcast that augments the materials on display, and which lends more information to anyone wanting to tour the facility. Fortunately, this podcast is a compatible mp3 file, that works with mp3 players and most smartphones. The podcast can be downloaded in advance of visiting and it provides the perfect narrative companion to the exhibits. There is general interest information, pub lectures, notable speakers, and other educational events held throughout the year, as the site strives to offer more to the public than just a standard museum. Global topics as they relate to new developments in technology and science, engineering and mathematics, are included in the educational events held there. Some of the stories and myths that surround the mysterious location known as 'Area 51' are featured at the museum, which creates added interest for the public, as Area 51 has been shrouded in secrecy for years.

More information regarding hours of operation, admission prices, educational events scheduling, and group tours and directions to the museum, are available on the museum's website (*note that the museum has a strict policy regarding photos, video or mobile phone use while on the property). For the scientifically inclined, or anyone with an interest in history, the Nevada Atomic Testing Museum is a fascinating encapsulation of both.
