Achieving this status requires you to complete a progressive sequence of electrical qualifications which, when completed, will provide you with separate but complimentary skills in a specific electrical area.
This progressive sequence includes the electrical qualifications City & Guilds 2330 at levels 2 and 3, City & Guilds 2382, City & Guilds 2391 and certain sections of the newly created City & Guilds 2357.
The City & Guilds 2357 was introduced in 2011 to replace the City & Guilds 2330 at levels 2 and 3 but the 2330 has not been completely phased out and both routes remain an acceptable entry level route into the electrical industry.
Once the first sequence of qualifications has been completed a trainee will be required to register on a Part P scheme so that they can self certificate the work they perform in domestic dwellings.
In order to be able to perform PAT Testing, a trainee electrician will have to take the City & Guilds 2377 and the following qualification they will need to take is the City & Guilds 2392 as a precursor to the City & Guilds 2391 complex exam.
With so many qualifications required to complete the JIB Gold Card package, a considerable investment of time and money is needed from anyone who wants to become an electrician, which makes choosing the right training centre essential.
If you choose to train for a JIB Gold Card with one provider, you must ensure that they have a dedicated electrical centre which is equipped with the latest, cutting-edge technologies.
A dedicated electrical centre should have enough space for trainees to work in and they should be provided with their own tools for use during the complete period of training.
Centres should also have air conditioned classrooms equipped with plasma screens and display boards to aid theory-based sessions where practical work is not required to be performed.
An electrical centre must cater for all types of installation, whether it is domestic, industrial or commercial work, because the JIB Gold Card will cover the different areas of work.
One way to make certain that a training provider has facilities that meets all these requirements is to visit their centre in person so that you can see with your own eyes what they have to offer.
Visiting a centre will give you the opportunity to talk about the complexities of the JIB Gold Card with current trainees and staff members.
