Anyone familiar with 1988 film "Good Morning, Vietnam" will, no doubt, remember the unique method used by the main character, Adrian Cronauer, played by comedian/actor Robin Williams, to instruct members of his English as a second language class. Not really a teacher, but trying to meet a young Vietnamese girl who has caught his eye, Cronauer interrupts a class where students are learning about shopping for food and pays off the instructor, who then allows him to assume the teaching role.
As lesson of the day quickly transforms from, "Excuse me, I would like to buy some cheese and butter," to, "Hey, baby, what's happening? Slip me some skin." Classes become filled with humor, full of slang and off-color expressions, and students start enjoying themselves as the learning seems to accelerate under the new teaching regime.
While it would be difficult to duplicate the teaching intensity brought by Williams' brand of comedy, a normal, structured classroom setting is one popular way for students to learn to speak the English language. Traditional classroom-based instruction offers several benefits not available with other methods of learning ESL. Frequent interaction with the instructor and other students can provide much needed support to those trying to learn a difficult new language and, after class, students have the opportunity to form smaller groups to continue their lessons. English as a second language classes are offered through a variety of programs held at schools, community colleges, community centers and private agencies.
For those students favoring a classroom-type teaching method but who are unable to attend because of scheduling conflicts or lack of a nearby program being offered, similar group courses can be pursued on the Internet. For those with computer and Internet access, this is a way to have a similar experience that the classroom environment provides, but without having to travel to a specific location to attend. This method of learning is both convenient and flexible for the aspiring ESL student.
Another learning option is through the use of audio tapes, records, CDs or DVDs. While this method alone may not be as interesting or instructive as the ones previously mentioned, audio programs can be a big help in learning correct pronunciation, especially for students who already have a basic familiarity with the language. Audio recordings are also often used as a supplement to other learning methods.
For some, instructional books may be the only avenue open to them for learning ESL. If they don't have the ability to attend classes, and lack the necessary equipment to go online or listen to audio programs, motivated students can still gain an understanding through the written word.
