The Common Core Standards Defined

The Common Core Standards is a national program that has been adopted by 45 of the 50 states. Currently the only states that have not begun using the standards are Alaska, Texas, Nebraska, Virginia, and Minnesota. Its purpose is to help students to better prepare for college and a career. It sets expectations for each grade level from kindergarten to 12th grade. Students work with parents and teachers to achieve these goals.

English Language Arts

One of the areas that is included in the core curriculum is English language arts. This area focuses on reading, writing, speaking and listening and sets forth expectations for what the student should be doing at each grade level.

The Standards define what it means to be literate today. In order to meet or surpass the goals of the common core, students are expected to show a certain level of competency in the classroom. These skills have applications outside the classroom , and the student will be able to use them in his future education and career. When a student meets the Standards in English Language Arts, he is more likely to understand and enjoy reading.

Why All the Fuss Over Learning to Read?

Learning to read is an importance step a student will take in better understanding the world around him or her. In the first few years of a child's formal education, he learns to read. As he progresses, he reads to learn. Reading allows the student to learn about different cultures, places and things. When a child reads, she is able to use her own thought processes to be able to make inferences. Inferential thinking is important because it allows the child to draw her own conclusions from what she has read. The child is able to ask important questions that delve beyond who, what, where, when and how.

Making inferences can help the student be able to apply the material he has read to his own life. He does this by looking at the obvious, straightforward facts in the text as well as finding hidden clues or "reading between the lines" to solve a problem. He can then draw conclusions based on what he has read and what he has experienced and learned about in the past.

When students, parents and teachers are on the same page and can work together to meet the goals set forth by the Standards, the reading skills of students improve.
