Top Tree Facts

Trees have always surrounded people in their day to day lives. Whether it be in the garden, on the street or in parks, trees are perfect for cowering from the rain, shading yourself from the sun and hiding behind during hide and seek. Tree surgeons are experts in all things trees, so it's time to brush up your knowledge with our top tree facts!

1. Healthy Trees

No trees ever die of old age. This is a myth, as trees can live on and on if they have the right conditions to thrive. Other factors cause trees to wither and die. Disease, insects and even people are the main causes for killing trees. Tree surgeons are trained to detect diseases as more diseases have been identified as killing trees.

Oak Trees

1. A fully grown Oak grows and sheds around 250,000 leaves every year and can produce up to 50,000 acorns in a good year. Tree surgeons are trained in pruning large trees to make them more manageable. This can be a dangerous job so is best left to the professionals.

Trees Bring You Luck

2. The old myth of knocking on wood for good luck originated from primitive tree worship. It was believed that rapping on trees was a way of summoning protective spirits that lived inside the trees. Although some may not want to summon protective spirits, they still knock on wood as a means of avoiding bad luck!

Dendrochronology

3. This is the science of dating trees by the study of their rings. Trees rings can provide accurate information about environmental effects, simply by studying how their rings look. Volcanic eruptions and forceful earthquakes can dramatically change the trees shape and direction of growth.

Fruit Trees

4. Fruit Trees provide berries for wildlife. The berries are designed to be dispersed so that the birds have to search for their food. Fruit trees are not harmed by birds taking the berries from them. Tree surgeons tend to prune fruit trees regularly, as it helps to encourage more fruit to grow.

Material Uses

5. Trees are not only pretty to look at, they provide many materials for us to use - including paper. It takes approximately two tonnes of timber to make one tonne of paper. Paper is made from the pulp in the wood, known as pulpwood. This is found in a variety of soft and hardwood trees.
