I'm a judgment broker that that a lot. Degrees often matter a lot, and formal degrees usually make all the difference as you look for employment. But, success long term depends a lot more on what is learned after a degree or certification gets earned. People that earn certifications and/or degrees long ago, will discover over the long term, that by itself is usually not enough; one needs to keep on doing, training, and learning, to make any progress.
Now, there are many great choices to learn many things for free over the internet. No longer is money and your location a reason not to learn most any topic. There's nearly always value in learning, although there could be a really long waiting time before there are financial rewards from (just) new information.
Even if there were no additional benefits, the consistent action of learning has value. Writing this article is more useful than not doing anything. Real-world results come from focused actions and practice over the long term. Learning will improve your mind, and we are all better off learning more than knowing less.
Will free online learning do you some good in today's economy? Free web-based classes are usually very good, and lots of them include lectures and tests, however there's not any diplomas ("sheepskins") that you can show anyone or hang on your wall). Most employers make decisions on who gets hired based on degrees and certifications. However, keeping your job depends primarily on what you learn (this is where online learning helps), experience, and attitude.
Even if lots of learning does not help you find employment, sufficient study may increase your chances of creating your next job. When you are waiting and applying for jobs and/or opportunities, you can learn things to increase the chances of finding either someday.
Starting your own business online, or any other way; is usually 50% what you do and 50% what the world does. But, the only part one has any control over is your actions, so why not work on the part that you have control over?
Education for free is awesome, not only because it's absolutely free, also because you can learn in your pajamas or multitask. To get started, just do a web search for "Free Online Training" or "Free College Courses". Some of the better sites include alison.com, coursera.org, gcflearnfree.org, khanacademy.org, openculture.com, professormesser.com, ted.com, and udacity.com. One may also find many free books online as PDFs.
Online education is huge, and corsera.com alone has taught more than three million customers. With no official diplomas or certificates, why is free online training so popular? Because it is free and so much more convenient. You can't pause a regular college class, or watch television or enjoy music while attending a regular classroom. Online courses wait for you to visit the bathroom, until you're off the phone, etc. When there is not much better going on, why not learn things?
