A Risk Management Course Is Vital For A Career In Global Corporate Security

There will always be a debate as to whether American jobs should stay in the U.S. or go overseas. No matter which side of the debate someone is on, the fact remains corporations have a financial interest in oversea ventures. However, a venture is only beneficial if the risks involved do not outweigh the benefits. Security professionals, especially those trained in the global arena, are often asked to perform or assist with risk assessments. For anyone interested in entering into the global corporate security career field it is highly recommended they take a risk management course.

A risk management course is likely to be comprised of several courses related to risk/threat analysis and risk mitigation. These two components have other key concepts, and each class will offer more pieces towards the puzzle of identifying problem areas that corporations need to understand. The ability to analyze threats and present them to decision makers allows companies the ability to make clear educated decisions regarding potential investments.

The key point to risk analysis is to know what you are getting yourself into before it is too late. For anyone who has seen the Tom Hanks movie, The Money Pit, the point becomes much clearer. A house that looks good at first is purchased, but soon becomes the bane of the lead couple's existence as one thing after another goes wrong. The characters did not undertake critical steps to determine the condition (risks) of the house before entering into a long term financial commitment. Of course in Hollywood there is a happy ending - all too often reality is not a happy one.

Within the global corporate security field the above example would be unacceptable. Security professionals are expected to know where to look to find problem areas and to know how to weigh the risks and provide accurate, timely information to those who need it. Areas of risk management involve more than the physical security of the planned facility, but also the conditions surrounding the employees who are likely to be brought in to work there. Hostilities towards the U.S, traffic, geology/geography, local customs and/or legal issues all play a part in the safety and security of the employees, which has a direct effect on the parent company.

Those who have gone through a risk management course are better suited to understand the many aspects of security that a corporation will be faced. Without baseline knowledge, many security aspects could fall through the cracks as the security practitioners experience/exposure to risks may be limited in view. Additionally, standardized formats of risk management offer consistency in details, which allows for better planning as to what can be expected from the risk analysis.

The second part of risk management is risk mitigation. Not all risks can be eliminated, but for those that cannot be eliminated it is important to be able to know risk mitigation to lessen the impact on the corporation. Mitigation techniques involve any plan that deals with specific problems that have been identified in the risk analysis. Finding the financial balance between risks and risk mitigation is the focal point of taking a risk management course.

Risk assessment is the tool to use prior to undertaking a major challenge. Risk mitigation includes the tools and techniques used to reduce the impact of issues that could not be removed. Corporate global security operators will be tasked with conducting risk management tasks. Having a risk management course under one's belt will better enhance the operator's ability to ensure all risk mitigation plans are sufficient to deal with the issues that are inherent. A successful risk manager will be able to foresee and possibly prevent many issues and be able to create a plan of action for threats that cannot be completely eliminated.
