Thinking Of Shifting Majors?

Whether you were once committed to a bachelor of journalism and now you can't stand the field or you have simply fallen out of love with the idea of getting a bachelor of environmental science, you are likely thinking of switching majors. While most people switch majors early on, there are also people who do it after several years of study. How can you do it in a way that will serve you best?

Do It Early

If you know that you are not in the right major, it is time to stop dead in your tracks. You may consider taking general education classes before you make a final decision, or you may simply take a break for a while. If you need to switch majors, you may not be graduating on time anyway, so don't take classes that won't count for anything.

Get Counselling

Your school likely has a counsellor on hand who can help you through this. Not only can they help you figure out what you really want, you'll also find that they can get the paperwork going that will allow you to proceed with your major shift.

Look Ahead Five Years

When you are in school, it is very hard to look ahead to the future; you've got a lot going on and a lot of work to do, after all! However, remember that schooling is also a means to an end. What kind of future can you look forward to with the degree you have? Is it the right future for you? The more you think about the future, the more you will learn what kind of classes you should be taking.

Be Brave!

You may get a lot of snide words from family or friends when you switch. The truth is that no matter what, it is no one's business but yours. You need to control your own future, and sometimes, what's best for you is going to be switching majors.

When you are thinking about switching majors, take a moment to consider your needs and your wants. It is always better to go into a decision like this one with wide open eyes.
