CNA Exams - Getting Your Certification

Your career as a certified nursing assistant starts with your enrollment in an accredited CNA training program but it is just the first step. You must pass and take the CNA certification exam that, in many cases, is administered by the local Red Cross. You should ask about Nursing Registry, the Department of Education or the school where you are enrolled in about the details of said certification exam.

In this article, we shall discuss the basics of the certification exam - when to go, what to bring, and what to expect, among others.

When to Go

Days before of the CNA certification exam, you should check out the venue itself. You will then be able to plan the best possible route going to the exam area, thus, avoiding any delays (i.e., traffic jams, on-going road construction) along the way. You should also scoop out the rooms where the written test and practical skills test will be conducted.

This way, you will not be delayed in going to the exam venue. Keep in mind that tardiness for any reason is not a valid excuse to be given a special exam. To be on the safe side, you should arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the exam.

What to Bring

You should bring your healthy mind and body, first and foremost. Eat a healthy breakfast, take a bath and brush your teeth are among a few of the preparations you must do. You should also bring water and a non-perishable lunch, pens and pencils, and other personal supplies. In most cases, you will be required to wear your scrubs and non-skid shoes as well as a watch with a second hand for the practical exams.

What to Expect

If you have been a diligent student during the CNA training program, then the certification exam should be a breeze. There are actually two parts to the exam, namely:

• The skills test requires the applicant to show competent hands-on skills in five areas within a given time frame usually 25 to 30 minutes. The 5 skills for testing are chosen at random by the proctor and may include taking vital signs (pulse, blood pressure, and weight), repositioning patients, and giving baths. When you pass the skills test, you will be provided with a Skills Completion Card, which you should show to the proctor during the written exam.

• The written exam involves multiple-choice questions. You will also be given a Written Completion Card when you pass it along with the Completion Certificate. All of these three documents will now allow you to work as a certified nursing assistant! Your State certificate will usually arrive within 16 weeks.

Here's hoping that you will pass both parts of the exam. When you fail one part, you can always take a re-test for it. Just make sure that you will be able to pass both parts within 3 tries and while your papers are still valid.
