Make A Career Change By Becoming A Certified Dental Assistant

A dentist will always need the support of a dental assistant. In fact, dental assisting is one of the fastest rising profession in the US today. The demand for dental assistants is pretty high because the thing is - dentists cannot do it all alone. They need help. But as prominent and reputable dentists, they are bound by law to hire assistance from certified and qualified professionals only. This is where national certifications and state exams come in.

What are national certifications?

The Dental Assisting National Board Inc. regulates the certification for people who are interested in becoming dental assistants. There are various national certifications which people can take in order for them to practice their chosen field anywhere in the country. These national certifications are (with trademarks and copyrights respectively) Certified Dental Assistant, Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant, Certified Orthodontic Assistant and Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant.

What are state specific exams and certifications?

Some states in the US require that the dental assistant practicing in their locality is a passer of their state specific exam. For example, in Maryland. If you want to practice dental assisting there, you will have to pass the state specific exam called General Dental Assisting (MDG) and Orthodontic Assisting (MDO). To be sure, search the DANB website for these requirement.

Why are these tests and certifications needed?

It just shows that the government is doing the job of protecting the residents. Imagine if a person not trained to work as a dental assistant will do the job of a dental assistant, what can happen? It is very risky and dangerous - the patient can get hurt. This is one example of preserving the quality of service. Only the trained professionals can handle tedious jobs like dental assisting.

Now, I understand. But how can I get the adequate training before taking the test?

This is the role of a dental assisting school. First off, before you can take the dental assisting examinations and certifications, you have to go to a dental assisting college. Some programs can last up to two years. Some a number of months close to one year. But some colleges are so valued and concise, the program can be finished in a few months. It will really depend upon your choice.

Do not hesitate to ask for the dental assisting program. Some students feel that school is all money. But you know what, some schools accept installment payments. Some even allow study now, pay later agreements. Make that call. Or better yet, visit the local dental assisting school. Take that chance.

Go to dental assisting school. Select your dental assisting program. When you are done, take an exam. Take the shot. Become a dental assistant!
