The Fundamental of First Aid!

Have you ever seen first aid rescuers in action. They are clear and precise on their actions, because they follow their training and proper rules. Stay calm and follow the method of operation has proven to save lives. This doesn't come by chance, they train hard before going out in the field. They learn the rules and the method of operations. This efficiency helps to save time and this may save a life.

Asking the victim question does two things. You are verifying if the person is responsive and has consciousness. If they do respond, this will help out with finding the cause of the victims suffering. You should also ask anyone around if they know what has happened. This will give you a great insight on what first aid to apply. Before you jump in and start helping, look around. By looking around verifying that it is safe for you to advance to the victim. You need to know what is the cause of the suffering, this will let you know what first aid to use.

First aid is not permanent aid, it is just that first aid. Since first aid is temporary, you are stabilizing the victim. Sometimes you may need more hands, so ask for help. These helpers could help you with the victim or they could call for help. If they are calling for help, they need to know the location and what is the cause of the injury. If you're the one giving the first aid, you're in charge. The helpers should do specific duties and make sure the orders are clear.

We all want to jump right in and offer help to the victims of any accident. However, you should never put yourself in danger or to make matters worse for the victims. It takes a calm cool head in emergency situations. Never storm into an emergency scene and use a first aid without processing the possible hazards. For example, a bridge has fallen and has trapped some victims under it. Before you can rescue them, make sure the structure is not going to collapse any more and will not put you or the victims at further risk. Another example, at a car accident scene, don't move the victims. The injured persons could have broken bones or spinal injury. Only move them with professional help or if their life is in danger.

When you roll up on an accident scenario you need to decide the severity and the number of casualties. Understanding the number of victims and the seriousness of their injuries will greatly help you to decide who needs treatment first. This same information will help out the dispatcher or operator on what to send and how much to send to the accident scene.

You should always keep an emergency kit nearby. Stored it in your car, in your house, or even at work. Have it readily accessible for an emergency.
