CNA Certification - Get It The First Time

The first step to becoming a nurse begins with receiving the Certified Nursing Assistant certification, which allows the recipient to work under supervision assisting patients with medical care. This usually includes helping the patient with bathing and mobility issues, dispensing medicines, taking vital signs and providing day to day care for hygiene issues. The work varies a great deal as to location and type, depending on the patients needs and what care is needed and this CNA certification is needed to inform physicians, nurses and other staff that the person holding the certification is trained and has passed any testing required for the position he or she is applying for.

To obtain this important documentation it is necessary to first enroll in the courses being taught. These classes cover a number of different areas pertaining to patient care that is needed. CNA's are usually the go between for registered nurses and patients; because of their unique position in day to day care, they often see potential health problems before the RN's or physicians will. The typical training class takes from four to six weeks and covers basic health care issues, charting, performing routine care and cleanliness of the physical area the patient is in.

After passing the required training and classes, there is an examination that is designed to test book knowledge and training. Passing this examination and receiving the certification means that you are qualified to work and have the training needed to do so. The cost of the program will vary according to where it is taken and the depth of qualification needed for certification; but the importance of this certification is that it is the basis upon which further schooling and specialization will take you. As a general rule, the more specialized nursing you know and receive training and certification in, the better pay and benefits are received.

The Red Cross offers this training as do many community, state and private colleges. There are programs that are used in select high schools for training receives the CNA certification upon graduation from high school; depending on the grades and evaluation from teachers. Considering the costs and time involved, the schooling and training is made up fairly easily upon completion of the course and certification. The highest demand for trained and certified nursing assistants when combined with the high turnover rate as workers move on to better jobs means the job market is fairly easy to break into. Advancement depends on what positions are open and the work put into the current job being performed. The certification is the key that will allow a person interested in a variety of nursing jobs to unlock the doorways leading to them.
