People born and raised in English speaking countries, learn the world's second language, as a first language. English speaking cultures place little effort into adopting a second language nationally, so Americans who want to know one, have to make their own plan for success. A Spanish school in Peru may be the answer.
Taking Spanish Classes in Peru
Native Speakers teach Spanish in classes that do not include the use of English. The experience is invaluable. Students hear the language wherever they go, not just at school. Studying a foreign language in one's own country somehow keeps the language foreign. To acquire a second language, being involved in a genuine communicative exchange is the key to success.
Schools not only offer excellent classes, but also cultural experiences. Most start in the morning with formal, traditional classes. Two or more afternoons per week students learn cultural dance. Students may also take culturally specific art classes if desired.
Home Stay Immersion Experience
It is wise to find a school that offers home stay. Home stay means the school has contracted homeowners within the community to offer a guest room to a student. Students pay a predetermined price for the privilege. Included are: private room, two meals per day, and a lot of opportunity to speak and understand Spanish as a temporary member of the family.
Language Immersion as a Volunteer
There are many volunteer opportunities in Peru. Some schools include this as an immersion experience for students. Areas of need are:
-Orphanages.
-Keeping the elderly company.
-Medical Internship.
Orphanages
Working as a volunteer in an orphanage gives students the opportunity to interact with children using the Spanish language. Students are less reserved; perhaps they perceive the children as non-judgmental, so there is less inhibition. The more Spanish students interact with others using the language, the better. Students play games with the kids, help serve meals, and may even help with improvement projects, such as painting.
Keeping the Elderly Company
Elderly Peruvians receive visits from volunteers. Students who participate in this kind of service get to speak a lot of Spanish. They help prepare meals, clean up the home, do laundry, shopping, and other errands. Clients need volunteers to read a letter, or help to write a response.
Medical Internship
Students of medical fields learn language skills that will serve them throughout their careers. Besides Spanish classes, these students volunteer as interns in the specialty they are studying. Students in specialized programs learn vocabulary specific to their field. The dual benefit of language immersion and practice in their chosen career combine to create a priceless experience.
Machu Picchu and Other Ancient Ruins
Attending a Spanish school in Peru takes many students to the heart of the ancient Inca empire: Cusco. Cusco not only serves as home to a variety of schools for foreign students, but also has some of the oldest buildings on the American side of the planet. The Inca, whose amazing architecture is still standing, founded the city. Students tour the old city comparing Inca-cut stone to Spanish construction. The Inca stonecutters' expertise was such that their buildings have no need of mortar. Stones fit together so tightly, that not even a sheet of paper can fit between them. Cusco is a train ride away from the lost city of Machu Picchu.
Studying in Peru may cost more than taking a course at your local library, but the two do not compare. If you must decide between buying a car, or studying in Peru, remember this: You will own many cars during your lifetime, but studying abroad is a once-in-a lifetime experience. The car will eventually wear out, but your knowledge and memories will last forever.
