5 Tips to Improve Your Reading Skills

Well how about this: are you looking for ways to become successful in the work place or at school? There are plenty of complicated strategies for doing this, yet chances are that the best place to start is with the very basics and reading is the basis for almost everything we do, especially as we move into the endless array of content that makes up the Internet.

So, you're probably wondering how can you improve your reading skills? You probably never even thought of reading as a skill. Do you think playing football is a skill? Can football players improve on their game? The answer is yes, and so can you with reading.

Location, location, location, What I mean is, pick a quiet environment that doesn't have lots of distractions. Sure you can multi task, you've been doing it since you were a kid. But the fact is, you can do ONE thing really well when you limit your brain to focusing on that one thing. So turn everything off and just focus on your reading.

Pick a topic that interests you. If you constantly are reading things that bore you (and this could happen in your job or at school) you're subconsciously teaching your brain that reading is bad. So switch to some pleasure reading for a change, like a hobby or sport, and get you brain on the right track that reading is good. This will help you stay engaged, and transfer these new reading skills to the rest of your reading agenda.

Improve your vocabulary. I know this sounds painful, but its really the key to reading comprehension. If you don't know the words, you won't know the meaning of the text, so why bother reading? Get in the habbit of looking up words in the dictionary as you run into them, and it will soon become natural. Another benefit will be your expanded ability to discuss topics at parties and gatherings.

Don't get frustrated: Think of reading as unraveling a mystery: an unknown word is really just a clue to what the entire article means, and it is your job to put all the clues together in the act of reading!

Practice, practice, practice. Put aside time every day to read a bit, and before you know it you'll be reading faster and comprehending more. Its all about exercising that muscle we call a brain. Use it regularly and feel it get stronger!
