Studying at the Humboldt University, Berlin
HISTORY: The Humboldt University in Berlin was one of the oldest universities in Berlin. Founded in 1810 as the University of Berlin (Universität zu Berlin) by the liberal Prussian educational reformer and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt, whose university model has strongly influenced other European and Western universities. From 1828 it was known as the Frederick William University (Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität), and later (unofficially) also as the Universität unter den Linden after its location. In 1949, it changed its name to Humboldt-Universität in honour of both its founder Wilhelm and his brother, geographer Alexander von Humboldt.

CSA COURSE: Learn German language - All levels offered: Elementary, advanced elementary, lower intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced German level. Classes are 45 minutes each session, and taught Monday - Friday. Morning and afternoon classes are available. Placement exams are given there, and students are placed in the proper level course. Components of the language lessons are: Grammar, Conversation, Writing, Listening and Reading comprehension, Pronunciation, and Literature. These are university level and taught by qualified faculty.
German Language Course Levels:
- Elementary German: 101 - Advanced Elementary German: 102 - Lower Intermediate German: 201 - Upper Intermediate German: 202 - Advanced German: 301
The Language Centre also offers a broad variety of courses other than German language such as English and even sign language.
ACCOMMODATION: Student apartments (furnished) are available for the course dates. The apartments are shared with other students, but each student has their own private bedroom. A living room, kitchen and bathrooms are included. As a rule, only persons of the same sex live together. Bed covers, dishes, vacuum cleaners, and coin laundry machines are included. There is no telephone or internet connection in the apartment. TV is only in some apartments.
The apartments are located 5 minutes from the U5 subway station, and from there 15 minutes subway ride to reach Alexanderplatz, then a 10 minute walk to Humboldt University.
Housing Cost is about $150 USD per week, per person. Students are required to pay a deposit around 50 euros ($80) in cash upon arrival and check-in. Check in is 1 - 2 days prior to course start date.
PASSPORT: A valid passport is required. Early registration is advised due to limited space. If you are not 18 by the program date, but will be soon, let us know and you may be able to participate. ARRIVAL: Students are expected to arrive at least 1 - 2 days prior to the starting date of the courses. If you arrive earlier, you can book a student hotel to stay before staying at the student apartment.
CAMPUS LIFE AT THE HUMBOLDT UNIVERSITY: The University offers the "International Club", whereby students from all over the world can meet. There is also a "Language Exchange Service" offering personal contact with a German speaker to help with learning the German language.
Counseling services are also available for students needing additional assistance in getting settled into their program, housing, and understanding German Culture. Students can find out more about these campus services by talking to the staff in the student office there.
Computer facilities and access to the internet are available at the University. Students also get "free" entrance to the museums of Humboldt University.
Also, students can purchase a monthly pass to use the local transport in Berlin for 75 euros.
SHOULD YOU GO? Every year over 3,000 young people decide to embark on their studies at Humboldt University in the heart of Berlin. There is hardly any other place where they can choose from the same variety: 242 degree courses - among them 29 international Master's and 46 international Ph.D. programs with lectures and seminars held in English.
The program also offers sightseeing in Berlin to the many historical sights, museums, events and cinemas including the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, UNESCO world heritage sites and many more.
