What is an Ancestral Origins Test?

Your family tree has been around for as long as history has been recorded. Each branch reveals a new relative, a new story and a new perspective on your family. However, most people don't know their family origins beyond their grandparents or great-grandparents. Having such limited knowledge about your family tree not only deprives you of the knowledge of your family's origins, but it also allows the stories of your ancestors to die out. That is why many people are getting ancestral origins tests.

What is an Ancestral Origins Test?

An ancestral origins test is a DNA test that determines the connection between your DNA and thousands of DNA profiles from all over the globe.

The test involves taking a sample of your DNA by swabbing the inside of your mouth with a cotton swab. The genealogists then analyze it against the numerous samples in the company's genealogy database.

How Does the Test Work?

Since a person could have a very diverse lineage, the test works by comparing your DNA to the DNA of various regions all over the globe. You could have very strong links to one region while having a very weak link to another. They then take the results of that test and narrow down the results even further to get a better result. This is accomplished by taking the regions with the strongest links and comparing your DNA to even more profiles from those areas to get a more specific report on your ancestral connections.

Once your DNA has been analyzed and compared, you will receive a report specifying your ancestral origins. Some genealogy companies will send you a map detailing each region that your DNA is linked to. The map is color coded to show you where the strongest links lie and where you have slight connections. A more detailed report can also be obtained that pinpoints exactly where your origins trace back to.

Simplicity of the Testing Process

These tests are simple, and they only take about 24 hours to complete. In fact, you don't even have to leave your home to do the test. You can easily take a cotton swab and take a sample of your own DNA to send in to a lab. Ensure that you don't smoke or drink coffee for a few hours before you take the sample. You also shouldn't touch the cotton part of the swab with your fingers at any time during the process. Doing so may cause complications with your sample and test. Once you have the sample, send it in to a genealogy company along with any payment required for the test. You should receive your personalized results in a short while.

Discovering your roots with an ancestral origins test can open your eyes to new world. With the test results in hand, you could also do some detective work of your own to discover relatives that you never knew you had. Knowing your family's history not only gives you valuable knowledge on your ancestors, but it also keeps your family tree's story alive and well.
