Characteristics Of A Good CNA

Although any individual putting the body and mind to task can learn what is necessary to work as a healthcare professional through taking qualified CNA training classes, the perfect candidate must possess characteristics that are never taught. There are actually four types of characteristics that, when added to knowledge and skills education, create the perfect certified nursing assistant. Those characteristics are:

Compassion - CNAs do have a tough position in any healthcare facility and typically spend more time with patients who were there for a reason. This reason may be medical, even if the facility is a retirement home or senior citizen center. The ability to understand and sympathize with the patient's feelings accompanied by an enthusiastic and eager desire to help will be necessary to be successful at easing a patient's discomfort or pain.

Empathy - Although closely related to compassion, this is also one of those personal characteristics and individual possesses that can never be taught. It is simply a gift that allows an individual to truly understand what another person feels and thinks. Successful CNAs can easily put himself in a patient's shoes to get a perspective of that individual's world and how to make it better.

Patience - is one of those characteristics that is very needed, and possibly always been an overabundance. CNAs always face the reality of dealing with a variety of different people who, for one reason or another, are never happy with the situation in which they find themselves. See amazing counter people who may appear to be extremely negative and selfish. Others will be stubborn if not angry. Some will also be suffering some level of incapacitation or incoherence making the need to be patient and foremost attribute when dealing with these types of individuals.

Cheerfulness - Yes, it is a cliche. However, cheerful and happy people have a tendency to be able to defuse any kind of troublesome situation. This is an important characteristic to possess since most CNAs work in an environment where there is a lot of unhappiness. Possessing a strong positive attitude while working with a smile upon one's face may just help to cheer up the life of someone else who is having a bad day.

Other Personal Skills Needed

CNAs need to have the ability to carry out specific orders for caring for the individuals in their charge. This includes possessing the necessary practical skills to perform the needed techniques to make sure that people receive the proper care. It does take an individual will to always do one's best.
