CNA Training Programs - Choosing The Best For Your Future

To become a good certified nursing assistant (CNA), you must possess dedication to diligent study, commitment to excellent patient care, and satisfactory compliance with the profession's regulations including its training program and certification exam. Keep in mind that each job in the healthcare industry is as important as the others and certified nursing assistants certainly perform many critical functions in the delivery of healthcare services.

Two Routes

Your career as a certified nursing assistant starts with enrollment in a legitimate training program. When we say legitimate, we refer to three things, namely:

• The valid educational credentials of the school, site or facility providing for the CNA training;

• The professional qualifications of the instructors in the program; and

• The quality of instruction, curriculum and practical training in healthcare facilities provided to the students.

There are two routes to certified nursing assistant education. First, you can attend classes in either of two general venues, namely, brick-and-mortar schools or websites. Your choices in schools range from universities offering healthcare-related courses to community colleges, technical-vocational establishments, and career schools. You can find plenty of choices in online sites as well.

Second, you have the benefit of free CNA training programs. These are usually offered by charity organizations like the Red Cross as well as by nursing homes and hospitals. The last two healthcare establishments offer free CNA certification programs to develop qualified manpower from within, so to speak.

A few words about free CNA certification programs: You will be required to work either as a paid employee or as a volunteer at the institution that sponsored your education for an agreed number of years. Only after completion of the terms of your contract will you be able to work in another establishment, if you so desire.

Two Reasons

Why then should you train toward becoming a certified nursing assistant? You have other options, of course, but you are well-advised to take up CNA education for these three reasons:

• Short-term study for long-term career. You will only be required to study for several weeks after which you can take the certification exam. Despite such a short-term study program, you are in for a long-term career with great possibilities for advancement within the healthcare industry. Think of your CNA education as your ticket to a great career.

• Good job market. Despite the high unemployment rates in other industries, the healthcare industry has stayed relatively immune to the effects of the recession. You then have good job opportunities especially in metropolitan cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Indeed, the road toward becoming a certified nursing assistant may be filled with challenges, which is to be expected in a healthcare profession, but the benefits more than offsets these challenges.
