Secondary education is seeing a large transformation from brick and mortar schools offering traditional degree programs to completely online universities offering degree programs previously seen at only military or law enforcement training venues. As security is becoming more and more open to the private sector, it is now very common to find a Corporate Security University offering a Bachelor's degree in security. This relatively new degree program entails an area of study not only in the field of security, but in business as well.
Corporate security is really the application of security and safeguard principles which protect the assets of an organization. The term "corporate" is a throw-back term when the only organizations that placed specific emphasis on security were corporations. Corporate security, or the more appropriate term security management, is a growing industry that is finding itself valued by many organizations. Even if a corporation does not have a full-time, dedicated security position, the fundamentals learned in a security program are often applied to many applications, within large corporations and small businesses to government as well.
A Bachelor's degree in security is a very new concept to many people. Even the term "security" is open to interpretation. Often the term security is used in reference towards computer systems and/ or network applications. In finding a school that is appropriate it is important to understand what aspects of security are the primary focus. Physical security measures, as opposed to computer security, are multi-faceted, with areas that can become specialty services, such as alarm systems, physical protection, CCTV, etc.
A Corporate Security University, under that label, is somewhat of a misnomer. The education is not limited to a true "corporation." A university falling under this label offers more than education relating to "corporate" security. These universities usually have risk management, loss prevention, physical security, and other areas that fall within the spectrum of security management. The university will provide many aspects of security and business, which have an application towards any organization, public or private.
Where the "corporate" within corporate security comes into play is at the business side of security. Security and safety in the business world will only have a role if it is cost effective and provides a return on investment. These are the terms corporate executives understand. A Corporate Security University will understand this concept and have educators capable of teaching cost effective security measures, proposal writing, and how to communicate the value of security to the organization. These areas are specific to the business side of the security program and are a key component within a Bachelor's degree in security.
Security in today's world cannot be accomplished without an understanding of business. In addition, the many skills expected of a modern security specialist require education from a reliable source that has proven methods and a vetted staff of educators in all aspects of security. A Corporate Security University that offers a Bachelor's degree in security will provide courses that address the above aspects and present them in such a way as to allow the student a complete comprehension on how all the pieces fit together. Once completed, the degree allows the student to be better prepared and more capable of adjusting to fit the security needs of his or her employer.
