The Advantages of a Nursing Career

More and more young people are choosing practical nursing school today than ever before. With the global economy suffering and the outlook for recovery looking bleak for the near future, many students are looking for an alternative to the typical four year liberal arts degree that puts them deep in debt with very little job prospects.

One industry that has not been affected by the economic downturn is health care. And one of the best ways to enter the health care field is through a nursing program. A nursing career offers several advantages over many other fields, here are 4 of the best:

Good pay, great benefits

The nursing field offers a very competitive pay scale, especially considering you can get into the field in as little as a year or two. For example, the average person completing an LPN program can expect to earn somewhere in the mid-five figures, depending on the area of the country they work in and their level of specialization. Compare that to the average college graduate today that is lucky to even have a job at all and you can see why so many area choosing this field. Oh, and in addition to the pay, the benefits are pretty good as well. Many nursing jobs are unionized, which means generous health and retirement plans have already been negotiated on your behalf.

Lots of Jobs

If you're looking for career stability, nursing can definitely give that to you. With aging populations worldwide, it is virtually assured that there will be an abundance of job openings in the nursing field for several decades to come. While other sectors of the economy are cutting back and/or outsourcing jobs overseas, nursing jobs are increasing-and this is one career where you will never have to worry about your job being outsourced.

Opportunities to travel

Since there are jobs in nearly every area, nurses also have the opportunity to travel and work in places of their choosing. And even better-the areas with the nicest weather (like Arizona and Florida), also tend to be the places with higher numbers of retirees and thus, more nursing jobs. In addition, there are many nursing agencies today that hire traveling nurses. This job is ideal if you enjoy moving around from one region to another and experiencing different places, all on the company's dime.

Fulfilling Work

Being a nurse can be one of the most fulfilling careers you can choose. This is a job where you are making a real and measurable positive difference in the lives of others day in and day out. There is nothing like the feeling of coming home from work and knowing that you helped several people stay healthy, and maybe even saved a life or two. Few professions offer the kind of fulfillment that nursing does.
