Ace Your Tests With Improved Concentration

There are times when we all find it difficult to focus and maintain attention, especially when trying to study or listen to a lecture or finish a project. Learning how to improve your concentration and sharpen your study skills can be extremely valuable in the long run.

These valuable tips may help you get better grades in college or even increase your performance at work:

The rule of five more - To build mental stamina and avoid frustration, just read five more pages if you are reading, or five more problems if you're doing your homework, or five more minutes if you're working.

Think about one thing at a time - We all daydream at times making it impossible to maintain attention and focus. If we write things down that are on our minds, we can then forget about them for the moment and give more attention to whatever we were doing.

Try to conquer procrastination - We all procrastinate at some time or other and know the guilty feelings that go along with putting off the work or study or project. The more we delay getting started, the more heavily it weighs on our minds. So applying oneself to complete the job at hand is the only way to make it go away.

Use your hands as blinders - Create "tunnel vision" by cupping your hands around your eyes so you are looking solely at your text book. By placing your hands on the side of your face, you block out all surroundings so they are "out of sight, out of mind". Narrow your focus in this manner and teach your brain to switch to "one track mind" to concentrate on your work.

See things as if for the first or last time - Our fast-paced lives have us rushing mindlessly everywhere, missing out on things right next to us. Try to be fully present in the "here and now" and focus on your immediate surroundings.

Life is full of distractions, interrupting our concentration when we're working on a project or studying. Attention training is a way to reduce distracting stimuli and improve your concentration. It stretches your attention span when the brain is tired by forcing you to continue to concentrate, thus building mental endurance.
