Studying at the University of Vienna, Austria

HISTORY: The University of Vienna was founded in 1365 and is the oldest university in the German speaking world and one of the largest in Central Europe. The University was founded on March 12, 1365 by Rudolf IV, Duke of Austria, and his two brothers, Dukes Albert III and Leopold III, hence the additional name "Alma Mater Rudolphina". After the Charles University in Prague and Jagiellonian University in Krakow, the University of Vienna is the third oldest university in Central Europe.

The University of Vienna has:

- 91,000 students enrolled in 188 courses.
- 9,400 employees , 6,700 of whom are academic.
- Foreign students from approximately 130 countries attending in more than 10,000 lectures.

CSA COURSE: Learn German language and culture studies.

- Summer German language courses: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. 15 lessons per week (each lesson is 45 minutes) - 60 lessons per month.
- Trimester Courses: 12 unit courses taught 5 days per week, in the mornings. Courses are offered at all levels (11 levels: A - C). Approximately 2 level phases are covered in a Trimester. 8 ECTS credits.

* Small group classes: maximum 16 students per class. * German language classes taught in German. (morning / afternoon).
* Minimum age in Vienna: 16.
* Placement test given there to determine proper level.
* Text Books used in class include: Delfin (Elem) / Hauptkurs, Abschlusskurs, Dreyer-Schmitt, used for Intermdiate and Advanced.

ACCOMMODATION: In Vienna - student residence type housing is available (single or twin rooms). Some rooms have private bathroom. Bed linens provided. Laundry facilities are available. Meals are taken at nearby restaurants around the University. Prices range between $7 - &12 USD per meal. Students are allowed to move in on Sunday, day before class starts. Housing reservation deposit of $500 USD required - credited towards housing cost. Housing costs about $500 - $875 USD per month. Meals cost $7 - $12 USD.

PASSPORT: A valid passport is required. A visa is not required for tourist stays up to 90 days (3 months). If you are not a citizen of the USA, please check with the nearest Austrian Embassy (Consulate) for entry requirements. Programs are open to all students and adults from all countries. Vienna program has a minimum age of 16. Open to working adults as well.

ARRIVAL: Plan on arriving the day before classes start to check-into your housing. Please check-in on Sunday. If you arrive earlier, plan on arranging your own housing until the official check-in date. Plan on arriving on the date you can check-into your housing.

CAMPUS LIFE AT VIENNA: The program in Vienna offers optional afternoon activities that may include: Special Courses, Lectures on Austria, Tutorial rooms for self-study, Video Rooms for German films, and Excursions that can include sightseeing in Vienna and surrounding areas, as well as planned parties for students. All these extra activities are optional (you can attend if you want), and they cost extra - ask the staff in the student office when in Vienna about the "activity schedule" and "prices". Excursions vary in price from 20 - 75 Euros.
