Increase Your Reading Speed

Taking an active part in your reading can help increase your reading speed. Sometimes we just have too much to read so being able to read faster helps. Most likely, we still read at the same speed that was set when we first learned how to read. We first learned to read with our mouths by pronouncing each word as we read them on the page. Reading that way now only slows us down. Reading without speaking the words will increase our reading speed. Talking as we read is called sub-vocalization.

Speaking the words is not the only way to slow down your reading speed. As you read, you're saying the words in your head instead of with your mouth and this slows you down just as much as speaking them aloud since it involves the brain in more than one activity simultaneously. You can't do two things simultaneously.

Increase your reading speed by utilizing the strategy of abstaining from reading with your mouth. This is especially helpful if you tend to actually speak the words as you're reading them. While reading, find another activity to keep your mouth occupied. You can easily do this by simply saying 1-2-3-4 over and over while you read Without consciously having to think about what you're reading, your reading speed will most likely increase. You can break the habit of saying each word by chewing on bubble gum while you read. You couldn't speak if you tried since your mouth is already engaged.

The next of the active reading strategies that I'm going to recommend to help you read faster is to stop reading individual words. As an alternative, group words together into 4 or 5 word combinations. For instance, try not seeing A-severe-winter-weather-system but instead "Aseverewinterweathersystem". Comprehending the words bunched together in a group is not a problem but speaking them will be.

Another technique for learning how to read faster is through the method of skimming. Try the approach of skimming a line instead of reading every word. It isn't necessary to read each and every word on every line. Your comfort level with this will increase with time as well as your level of comprehension. Complete paragraphs can even be skimmed once you're comfortable with line skimming.
