Are You Too Old for CNA Training Classes?

Admittedly, most jobs in the healthcare industry require a healthy mind and body for obvious reasons. Patients in clinics, hospitals and other medical establishments as well as residents in nursing homes need their healthcare providers as healthy as possible in the course of their duties. This does not mean, however, that anybody is too old to take CNA training classes in pursuit of a CNA certification.

No matter the age, every individual who meets all the prerequisites for taking these classes can enroll. Education, after all, is a right afforded to every individual under the nation's constitution so go ahead and look into these classes.

The prerequisites for taking CNA classes are minimal in nature. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent, which should be easy considering that more than 85% of Americans have attained said educational level. Your first step then is to gather the necessary documents to prove your educational attainment along with other papers to establish your identity, which will vary from one school to the next.

It does not matter whether you finished your high school education when you were 18 or when you were in your late 20s, 30s or 40s. For as long as you meet all the other prerequisites, you can enroll in CNA training classes.

Well, of course, we must emphasize that these classes can be physically and mentally demanding. Keep in mind that these classes are designed to prepare students for the roles and responsibilities of certified nursing assistants. Said roles and responsibilities include:

• Assisting patients with mobility impairments including getting in and out of beds and wheelchairs, turning them over when bedridden, and provide training in the use of assistive mobility devices like crutches.

• Observing and recording patients' vital signs (i.e., temperature and blood pressure)

• Feeding patients

• Caring for patients including housekeeping their rooms and beds

During CNA training classes, these roles and responsibilities will already be practiced particularly during the in-clinic training phase. You should be physically and mentally healthy in order to perform these activities no matter your age.

It is not just your physical and mental health that should be in good condition while working your way toward a CNA certification. You should also possess certain emotional traits to successfully carry out your future roles and responsibilities as a certified nursing assistant. These traits, which cannot be taught in any of your CNA training classes, include:

• Compassion - You must place yourself in your patients' shoes and empathize with their circumstances. In so many ways, you are nursing them back to health so be empathetic.

• Patience - You can be stressed with your various duties especially when dealing with difficult patients as well as with your colleagues and superiors. You should be patient as much as you possible can with all of them.

Again, you can take CNA training classes for as long as you are well-equipped for the job in both the physical and mental sense.
