Choosing A School For Your Child Is The First Step To Success

A factor that plays a huge role in success in later life is early schooling experiences. This makes choosing a school for your child very important and worth taking the time to get right. Remember, beliefs determine attitudes, and important beliefs which shape the future are mostly laid down early in life.

While it is true that many children succeed despite poor schooling and a bad background, this is rare and far more fail in life because of these factors. There is no reason to subject a child to such challenges unless you have no option in the matter. This is why good parents take the trouble to provide a nurturing environment which will form attitudes leading to success.

The biggest influence on children at schools in the early years is the class teacher. You are looking for a loving home-like environment, not a drill sergeant. Leaving home is stressful enough without being sent to a penal colony. Be alert if a child still seems reluctant to go to class after the first few days.

You should speak to the teacher and visit the classroom. You are looking for an emphasis on words and reading, with lots of books available. If your child can develop a love of reading early, this is an enormous advantage in later life. A teacher who encourages language and the use of books is a gem.

Also try to find out what attitude the teacher has towards math. Negative attitudes are easily passed on, and can lead to mental blocks. A student who has a negative attitude towards a subject is unlikely to do well. While there will be no abstract concepts at this stage, simple encouragement of counting is enough to reinforce innate abilities, and there is much that can be done at home to encourage familiarity with math.

If possible, speak to children who have attended the local schools. Also ask the opinion of their parents as to the quality of the schooling provided, and how the children are now performing, especially their attitude towards math. Try to find out what the incidence of bullying is, and the attitude towards this sort of dysfunctional behavior is. The more you can find out, the more likely you are to make the right decision.

Unfortunately, standardized performance tests are not good indicators of the quality of schooling. They encourage schools to teach to the tests to the detriment of other factors. Only a small part of the curriculum is focused on by these tests, so your child could be inadequately prepared for later classes. A good foundation is essential for both buildings and learning.

Choosing a school for your child is an important step. Just the fact that schools ire private or have charter in their names does not guarantee quality education. Remember, many high school graduates are inadequately prepared for college. Laying a really great foundation for education is an important step and it is worth spending some time to get it right. Also be alert and react quickly to negative indications from school-going children.
