HISTORY: Grand Palace Bangkok Thammasat University is the second oldest university in Thailand. Officially established to be the national university of Thailand on 27 June 1934, the university was originally named by founder Pridi Banomyong, The University of Moral and Political Sciences. It started with 7,094 students enrolled in its first academic year studying law and politics. The guiding philosophy of the university was "to teach students to love and cherish democracy". The university's name was shortened to its present by the Revolutionary Council. Nevertheless, Thammasat University has always been involved in Thai national politics, counting most Thai political leaders among its graduates.

Thammasat today offers more than 240 academic programs in 23 different faculties and colleges located on four campuses. Over the nearly 80 years since its founding, Thammasat University has evolved from an open university for law and politics to a prestigious international university offering all levels of academic degrees in many fields and disciplines. It has graduated more than 300,000 undergraduate and graduate students who have greatly contributed to the development and progress of Thai society and the nation. The university's alumni have included most of all Prime Ministers, leading politicians and government figures, Bank of Thailand governors, Supreme Court presidents, judicial officers, and most of the city's governors. It is ranked No.447 in the world.

CSA COURSE: The Thai Studies program is conducted at the Pridi Banomyong Campus. Courses are in English, and emphasize current issues, interaction among instructors and field trips. Thai language classes are designed to equip students with the necessary skills in Thai communication. Overall, it is an interdisciplinary program designed for students interested in Thai culture, language, and its historical and contemporary issues.

• 353 Buddhism in Thailand (3 credits)

Summer Thai Culture Studies (Taught in English)

• 4 Weeks (July 1st - 26th, 2013) Cost: $2895 USD
• Includes: Housing and activities
• Not included: meals, air tickets (flight), visa fees (if needed), and personal expenses.

ACCOMODATION: Housing is included in price, and provided in nearby campus accommodations. Shared dorm style rooms are within walking distance. Meals are not included.
If you want to arrange own housing, a $700 credit will be given (deducted).

PASSPORT: A valid passport is required. Minimum age is 18. Age 17 may apply with parent consent.

ARRIVAL: Plan on arriving a few days prior to start your housing and get settled. Airport pick-up is available (airport transfer: back and forth). Let us know in advance.

FINANCIAL AID: Yes, you can use your financial aid for this university based program. Please e-mail your Consortium Agreement to CSA. See the "Financial Aid" section on our website for details. Useful website links regarding scholarships will be included with your confirmation documents.

CAMPUS LIFE AT THAMMASAT UNIVERSITY: The campus is close to some of Thailand's most sacred temples and many government ministries, as well as the Grand Palace of the reigning Chakri dynasty, the National Theater and National Museum. The Bangkok Campus is in Phra Nakhon, Bangkok in close proximity to many tourist destinations. Organized field trips within Bangkok and other locations such as Ayuddhaya, Grand Palace, Old Bangkok and Chiang Mai are included in the Summer Session. Workshops within the campus also include Thai Dance, Thai Cuisine, Thai Massage and Thai Traditional Medicine.
