What You Should Know Before Writing The IELTS

It isn't a particularly tough test, but it can get quite technical. As many as 2 million people all over the world sit for the IELTS each year, putting it among the most accepted standardized examinations. Despite this, each successive year records even more people gladly sit for the test.

IELTS is a contraction that denotes International English language Testing System. With over three thousand educational organizations in the United States, and countless more across the world requiring candidates to take it before granting them admissions, it truly is an international assessment. In Ireland and the UK, the same pretty much applies, as well as in Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Canada is one country that welcomes just about any immigrant from anywhere in the world, and so is Australia; but neither nation thinks much of immigration applicants who haven't taken this exam.

'How good is your English?' that's what the IELTS test… tests, as you may be able to tell from its name. It tests you grammatically, this carefully chosen collection of questions; it tests you phonetically too; and it also tests you orally. There are four segments of the exam - speaking, writing , listening, and reading; they are called modules. The listening portion lasts 40 minutes, while the reading and written segments each take one hour. The whole test will not cost you all of three hours, what with only a maximum of 14 minutes and a minimum of 11 minutes allowed to complete the fourth module, the speaking.

This assessment is managed in part by three organizations of good reputation. Namely, they are the IDP Education Pty Ltd., the British Council, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. In addition to being one of the oldest universities in the world, Cambridge University is also one of the most celebrated; a charitable trust, the British Council is also popular around the world for fostering chances for culture exchange as well as education on an international scale. Cambridge's ESOL program - English for Speakers of Other Languages - is world renown, and combined with input from IDP and British Council, it makes the IELTS assessment that much more efficient.

A general version of the test exists for training purposes, while another version basically for academics. The best part of the IELTS test is that no minimum score is really necessary to pass it. "Band 0" represents a very low score, and "band 9" represents a high score, which makes you an expert. Institutions may however individually choose if they want to admit their candidates at a specific score, or at a higher or lower one. Unless you can prove that your English Language is still excellent as a result of efforts you have put into keeping it that way, or if you are able to repeat the test, you can no longer use a result you obtained two years ago in seeking admission now.
